Love Your Trees

Monday, November 30

1:00 PM - Patriotic Tree Planting to Kick Off Midlands Arbor Day Week at the Fort Jackson Gate 1 Traffic Circle

Two Live Oak trees will be planted at the Gate 1 traffic circle in honor of fallen Iraq and Afghanistan service members.  The ceremony will feature remarks by the South Carolina State Forester, the Commanding General, and other dignitaries. 

Directions to the Gate 1 Traffic Circle: Visitors must enter the Fort via Gate 2/Forest Drive. You will be required to show ALL of the following documents to enter: valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and current automobile registration.  From Gate 2, proceed straight for .5 miles to Jackson Blvd.  Turn right at the light.  Proceed SW on Jackson Blvd. to the traffic circle (1.25 miles).  Enter the traffic circle and take Ewell Road (third right).  Parking will be on the right.  Click here for a map.

Arbor Day exhibit opens at the Main Library, Richland County Public Library (1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC.)  The exhibit will remain on display through Arbor Day.

10:00 AM - Town of Irmo Arbor Day Celebration at Select Comfort (630 Western Lane, Irmo, SC)

10:00 AM - City of West Columbia Arbor Day Celebration at Reeves Community Park (761 Augusta Street; next to the tennis courts.)    

The City will plant two red maple trees near the gazebo and Mayor Horton will read the Arbor Day resolution passed by the West Columbia City
Council.  Light refreshments will follow. 

10:00 AM - City of Forest Acres Arbor Day Celebration at Crayton Middle School (500 Clemson Ave, Columbia, SC)

The city will plant nine October Glory Maple Trees on the Crayton campus.

2:00 PM - Town of Lexington and Lexington County Arbor Day Celebration and Tree Planting in Honor of the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouting at Gibson Pond Park (241 Gibson Road, Lexington, SC) 

2:00 - 5:00 PM - Planting an Edible Orchard at the USC Green Quad (1216 Wheat Street, Building D)

The Green Quad, in association with the University’s landscaping department, will plant trees of different fruit varieties to create a sustainable area of community in the South lawn of the Green Quad, where residents, students, faculty, and others may commune while enjoying the fruits of an edible orchard that is maintained by the principles of permaculture.  Students and members of the Columbia community are encouraged to volunteer to help plant the orchard. This project is made possible through a grant garnered by two undergraduate students, Austin McNeilly and Brandon Truett.

2:30 PM - Treasured Trees Announcement at the fountain between the Lace House and the Caldwell-Boylson House at the Governor’s Mansion.

Saturday, December 5

Saturday Story Time: Tree Stories.  Sponsored by the Richland County Master Gardeners and the Richland County Library.  Times and locations: 

Monday, December 7 (Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day)

Tree planting at U.S. Navy building at the Chaplain Center and School on Fort Jackson

Volunteers are needed for a tree planting along the new entrance to the Air Force and Navy schools at the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Center (AFCC).  These trees will be planted on December 7th in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. 

Volunteers are asked to arrive at 12:00 PM. Please wear closed toe shoes and dress for the weather. Please bring work gloves and a shovel if you have them.
