Teen Phone Book Sculpture Contest
What: A contest open to young adult teams (ages 14-18) from Lexington and Richland Counties
When: Saturday, March 6, 2010, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
- Construction: 1:00 – 3:00 pm
- Judging/Pizza: 3:00 pm
- Winners announced: 3:30 pm
Where: Sam’s Club Parking Lot (350 Harbison Boulevard, Columbia, SC 29212)
Grand Prize Team Award: $250.00
1st Runner-Up Team Award: $100.00

Waiver Form (required for each team member)
Teams must:
- Be sponsored by a school, faith based organization, civic group, or other institution based in Lexington or Richland Counties.
- Submit contest entry form by March 2 and waiver forms for each team member – the first twelve teams to submit complete entry forms will be eligible to compete.
- Have at least three and no more than seven members participate the day of the contest.
- Have at least one adult present the day of the contest.
- Collect and provide their own phone books to build their sculpture.
- Create an entirely free-standing teen-built team sculpture.
- Agree to have all team members stay until after the judging is complete, awards have been presented, pictures have been taken, and tear down is complete.
- Consent to use of photographs of team members and completed sculptures by Keep the Midlands Beautiful in print and on the Keep the Midlands Beautiful website.
Sculptures must be created and built out of recycled phone books only! No tape, glue, or any other fixative may be used. Sculptures must be able to structurally stand on their own from the time “Time” is called until judging is complete. At the conclusion of the event all of the sculptural artwork must be torn down and recycled by team participants into the provided bin.
Keep The Midlands Beautiful will provide:
- judges from the fields of art, architecture and the environment;
- pizza and soft drinks to team members at the conclusion of construction;
- a large recycling bin for recycling any and all phone books brought to the event on March 6;
- checks by USPS made out to the sponsoring institution of the grand prize and 1st runner-up winners
- photos on the Keep the Midlands Beautiful website.
In case of rain, teams will be notified of event cancellation the night before. Teams will be encouraged to build their sculpture in an indoor venue of their choice, take photos or video of their phone book sculpture and all team members and send, with the number of phone books used, to heidi@keepthemidlandsbeautiful.org no later than 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 7, 2010. Teams must agree that in case of rain they will deconstruct and take all phone books to one of the Keep the Midlands Beautiful Telephone Book Recycling drop-off locations no later than Sunday, March 14, 2010. Phone Book Sculpture winners will be notified no later than 5:00 pm on Monday, March 8, 2010.
