2008 Great American Cleanup: Midlands Makeover

Volunteer Groups Recognized for Clean-up, Beautification Efforts


Keep the Midlands Beautiful announced the winners of the 2008 Midlands Makeover Challenge on Thursday, May 15. A total of $3,200 in cash prizes were awarded for the most creative community improvement project, the biggest transformation, the best use of volunteers, and the best neighborhood association projects. The celebration recognized the work completed by 775 volunteers in Lexington and Richland Counties during the 2008 Midlands Makeover, which ran from March 1 to May 1. During this year's Makeover, volunteers contributed more than 2,200 hours of service, removed an estimated 21,000 pounds of litter from area roads and waterways, beautified public spaces, and painted over graffiti.

At the ceremony, several volunteers received door prizes donated by local businesses including Bose, Earth Fare, El Burrito, the Nickelodeon Theatre, Hip-Wa-Zee, Immaculate Consumption, and Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse. Danos Pizza donated pizza for the event, and Earth Fare provided snack bars.
