Thank you, UPS Volunteers!

As part of UPS Global Volunteer Month in October, 73 volunteers from the UPS South Carolina District contributed 229 hours to litter prevention projects in Lexington County and the Sumter National Forest. UPS volunteers removed nearly eight tons of litter from five locations in Lexington County, including the Double Branch Neighborhood, Airport Blvd, Highway 321, and Highway 302. The cleanups were a partnership among Keep the Midlands Beautiful, the City of Cayce, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, PalmettoPride, and the SC Department of Transportation.

Cell Phone Round Up!

To celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15, the national office of Keep America Beautiful has challenged Keep the Midlands Beautiful to collect 3 retired cell phones a day for recycling.

Help KMB meet our goal by rounding up your old cell phones for recycling!

  • Click here to print a free postage-paid shipping label to mail in your old phones. (Be sure to select Keep the Midlands Beautiful as your affiliate in the pull-down menu!)
  • Or, drop your phones in one of the "Wipe Out Wireless Waste" boxes that will be found around the Midlands during November.

The Lexington and Richland County school and faith-based organization that collects the most phones by December 15, 2008 will win their choice of a compost bin, a rain barrel, or 70 compact florescent light bulbs. KMB joins City of Columbia Green Business Program


Keep the Midlands Beautiful was named a member of the City of Columbia's Green Business Program at the April 16 City Council meeting. KMB set goals to switch out incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, to replace paper mailings with e-mail communications, and to remove KMB's name from mailing lists to reduce the amount of junk mail we receive.

Becoming a member of the Green Business Program is easy! Start by visiting the Climate Protection Action Campaign (CPAC) website. Review the steps and click on the the help sheets on this page before completing and submitting your application.
