Fall 2008 Student Advisory Board America Recycles Day
|
America Recycles Day is a designated day to educate the community about recycling. People were encouraged to bring their recyclables and were able to walk around. There were approximately fifty different booths representing different community organizations, non-profit groups, and waste haulers. These booths had numerous games, pamphlets and free give-a-ways to encourage, educate and motivate people to recycle. Refreshments were offered and local talent (such as a church choir and dance group) provided entertainment. Student Advisory Board members helped with games, prize distribution, and at the Keep the Midlands Beautiful table. At the end of the day I felt proud to have been a part of the learning process. It felt good to see that people enjoyed the games and were going to recycle the correct way rather than litter and dump harmful things. When I walked around I also learned a lot. One of the most memorable learning experiences for me was when I went to a local animal shelter's booth and was taught that by throwing Styrofoam cups and plastic on the ground, people can harm animals. Many dogs try to eat these things and can choke and die as a result. |
